Ever Versatile Houdini Kitchen Cabinet – Great Design, Many Uses

We can all dream about what sort of kitchen we like best.  I know one chap who absolutely adores scenes from the 1920s and 1930s and planned to keep his bungalow, built in just that era, exactly the same as it would have been.   Some of the planning has been changed along the way.  His partner was desperately unhappy with the idea of no fitted cabinets or heating and the sloped wooden draining board sitting on a single ceramic sink.  They came to a compromise and have cabinets a plenty but not fitted to the wall.  They are free standing.   One of their cabinets reminds me of the old type which involved a double door cabinet at the bottom, complete with one shelf and above the lower cabinet doors were two very deep drawers.   Then above those we had a hinged pull down hatch/cabinet door that laid flat upon the worktop was used for things like slicing and buttering bread, laying out plates of cakes and tea things.   Of course in the days when these ‘houdini’ style cabinets were standard issue, they were almost considered a luxury because kitchens were tiny and called sculleries!
